NFL Draft: Where are the Sooners Headed?

While Oklahoma Sooners flooded the first round of the NFL draft in 2010, the flow of Crimson and Cream into the show this year has been reduced to a trickle.

There are no Sam Bradfords or Gerald McCoys in this year’s class. If this crop of Sooners simply have long-term pro careers, most draftniks would consider that a win.

So, where will OU alums end up? Frankly, I only see three who stand a shot of getting drafted.

Will Get Drafted – No Doubt

*DeMarco Murray, RB
Scouting Consensus: Third round, could slide to fourth
Homerism Grade: Second round or early third

Whereas there’s little doubt Mark Ingram can play as an every-down back in the NFL, Murray’s injury history makes him a tougher sell. However, Murray developed a full complement of skills in his five years at OU. He catches the ball well out coming out of the backfield or lined up in the slot, and his blitz pick-up is solid. That versatility should serve him well in the pros. (And, yes, I know I drafted Murray in the first round in BH’s official mock draft.)

Best Fits: Saints, Eagles

*Quinton Carter, S
Scouting Consensus: Third round
Homerism Grade: Third round

“The Predator” won’t go down as one of the best safeties ever to come out of OU, but he was a consistent performer and has something to offer as a strong safety playing close to the line of scrimmage. Carter would fit best in an aggressive defensive scheme that takes full advantage of his solid tackling and striking ability.

Best Fit: Ravens, Jets

Could be Sweating Saturday Out

*Jeremy Beal, DE/OLB
Scouting Consensus: Fourth or fifth round
Homerism Grade: Fourth round

No one can knock Beal for his motor or competitiveness. However, his play suffered a bit this year with McCoy not occupying blockers next to him. He’s also a man without a country – personnel people seem to struggle with figuring out the best position for him. I think he’s a 4-3 defensive end.

Best Fit: Colts
