Filmmaker Jonathan Hock joins Homerism to talk about his superlative new ESPN “30 for 30″ documentary, The Best That Never Was, chronicling the rise and fall of schoolboy football legend Marcus Dupree. Dupree’s exploits during his short stint with the Oklahoma Sooners became the stuff of legends, but after a series of on- and off-the-field mishaps cut short his professional career, he’s now a truck driver back in his hometown of Philadelphia, Miss. Hock discusses why he was compelled to tell Dupree’s story, how he unearthed Dupree’s spectacular high school game film and what he learned from the best that never was.
