#BEDM – Walk to Work

I think this is going to be my easiest post for #BEDM as I take a lot of photos on my walk to work…

Everyday I leave the house to go catch the bus – the first 10 minutes of my walk are pretty dull, and usually I’m rushing as I’ve only just left the house in enough time to make the bus.

But once I get off the bus, I have a lovely 10-15 minute walk (depending on traffic and how much time I have) through some fields, down into the valley and often I take a little bit longer than usual taking photos on the way. I meant to take some new photos for this post actually, but the weather hasn’t been great, so I never really felt like it, instead I’ll share some of my favourite from the last 4 years that I’ve been walking the same route.

I really enjoy my walk to work, it gives me 10 minutes to myself to slow down and enjoy my surroundings before the work day begins.

If you want to see more photos, you can see all my ‘walk to work‘ posts here. Oh also, I have a little Lomokino video from last winter as well.

More snow…

I was a little bit worried about posting snow photos so long after it snowed here, but it actually looks exactly like this today now, its snowed here all morning and even though it looks lovely, I’m so over the snow!!

Although saying that, these are probably some of my favourite photos from this film, the last photo reminds me of Narnia. I’ve actually been waiting to take that photo for a while, so I was pretty pleased when the conditions were all perfect for it.

Anyway, at least we’re edging closer to Spring every day… right?

It’s odd how you can become quite fond of the things.
Especially those hidden amongst the everyday. But you do.
They all look a bit battered, but they still serve their purpose.

Snoooow!! So much snow. In fact, these photos I took before in the snow look quite pitiful in comparison don’t they. (I just realised that the first two photos are almost exactly from the same spot, I like that view…)

I’m not a huge fan of snow (mainly because it usually means ice…) but this walk to work was perfect… a real winter wonderland. In fact this roll was possibly the fastest film of photos that I’ve ever taken and I really love the results. Snow really does look great in black and white.

More snow photos…

If you read lots of UK blogs, then you’ve probably already seen loads of snow photos, but this morning was so glorious, I have to share these from my phone. I can’t remember the last time I actually enjoyed my walk to work so much, the snow just makes everything look stunning. As well as photos on my phone, I took a whole roll of film too – I can’t wait to get those developed.

snow 2

If you follow me on Instagram, then you’ve probably already seen these, sorry…
they are pretty though aren’t they.

p.s. I didn’t draw the heart, I saw it on the way to work, someone is enjoying the snow :)

p.p.s. These were edited with the newer ‘Willow’ filter on Instagram, have you tried it? I like it.

A few more photos that I took on Monday walking to work in the snow. As I couldn’t use my OM-10 I experimented a little with the aperture on the LC-A in the first and last photo and I’m glad that I did, its so easy to get comfortable just leaving it on Auto that I often forget to use it.

It’s meant to snow more today and over the weekend, so I’m actually a little bit excited about the idea of taking more photos in it.

Have a great weekend!!

I think I may have tested the limits of my little LC-A a bit too far by using a 100 ISO film in winter on a dull day and I have no excuse other than I was very excited about getting some Kodak Ektar film for Christmas and I was impatient… I’ll try and restrain myself with it until it gets brighter now.

However, I’m still pretty thrilled with these results, as they do show the colours and feel of the morning so much better than my phone did in colour (which is why all the other photos are B&W, I’m not going to talk about the issues I have with white balance settings) I really do love the tones of this film and I’m glad even tested to its limits that they still show.

Luckily, I also took some photos with this roll of film in the sunshine at the beginning of the month, which have been featured today on Clio’s blog as part of her Friends & Film series (another film blog series I just love) so if you want to see some sunshine and even lovelier colour tones from this film, please check out my feature there. Also Clio’s blog is lovely, her photography is beautiful and thoughtful, so its a double win.

A little healing…

Even though I still had posts on here last week (WP’s scheduled posting is better than Blogger’s) I actually spent the majority of last week in bed sick with Flu. It sucked. But this week is a new week and my first act to feeling better was taking my time walking to work, enjoying some sunshine (even if it was freezing) and snapping some quick photos on my phone.

I’ve taken photos of this walk a million times* but I realised this time last year (as part of Susannah Conway’s Photo Meditations) that it was my way of letting go before having to deal with work. In looking at things that are familiar differently, perhaps I can learn to do the same with everything else that’s happening around me too. Or perhaps, when everything hits the fan, I just like a bit of familiarity… I don’t know. Either way, I feel a bit better.

*slight exaggeration…

12 for 2012 – Camera 5

As part of my ‘take more photos’ goal for this year – I decided that I wanted to use more of the cameras that I haven’t actually used before in my collection. I am a little behind on these but I’m catching up and as long as I get 12 cameras done by the end of the year I’ll be happy.

double dip 1242012

I’m really very excited to be sharing this camera with you, it is the Double Dip by James Butler , a custom toy camera with an added multiple exposure switch – you can read more about the Double Dip here. I’d seen some results around the internet before I took any photos and I was fairly excited about taking this little silver baby out and I was not disappointed!

How fun is this camera? I love double exposures, I usually try to take my holga or diana with me when I go somewhere new but I’ve never had a camera dedicated to just multiple exposures alone, I think this camera will be going with me to new places now too.

I decided to post this today as 5 more Double Dip cameras are going on sale tomorrow at 9.30am GMT and if you love these results as much as I do,
I don’t think you’ll want to miss out!

You can also follow James on Twitter for more immediate information tomorrow morning.

Moo cows…

Haha, I tried to think of a better title but nothing came to me… so I’m sticking with it.
I have no shame.

The weather was glorious last week and I think even these friendly and inquisitive cows were enjoying it too.

Tomorrow is the beginning of a long Bank Holiday weekend and then we also have the rest of the week off too – I’m so excited, I can’t wait to spend the week with Thomas relaxing (this year has been hectic so far) and hopefully taking lots of pictures with my new and old cameras. I’ll have some posts scheduled though don’t worry – I still have lots to catch up on if you can believe that :)

Have a great weekend!!

After all the rain and dullness over the past two weeks (I guess the weather didn’t get my message about sunshine…) these photos make me so incredibly happy.

p.s. Thomas and I have a guest to entertain this weekend, we’re taking her to the beach.
It will more than likely rain but at least she’s getting a real English beach experience haha.

Finally!!!

Instagram is on Android!!

You would think that as a film photographer I wouldn’t be as excited about this as I am…
but I am excited!!
I can’t always carry a film camera around with me, whilst I always have my phone and a lot of the time English weather is pants, so the conditions aren’t always right for film photography.
And I do like to share my photos…

Take this morning… it’s snowed. In April!!! APRIL!!
Once again I have two pairs of thick socks on, lots of layers and my wellies are my best friend.
Not cool weather. Though, the photos are pretty, I will admit that and playing with new filters is fun too.

So if you’re on Instagram, leave a comment with your username – lets be friends!
Mine is:  Forthedistractd

p.s. there will be #harrygram!

More snow…

Looking at yesterday’s photos with this camera, I don’t think they actually do it any justice… especially when you compare them with these photos in the snow on my way to work.
Photo19_19Photo20_20Photo21_21Photo22_22Photo24_24 Photo32_32Photo23_23Photo25_25Photo36_36

When I first looked at these results I wasn’t too thrilled with them, and to be fair there are a few stinkers in the roll (you can see the entire roll here), but the good photos are really good I think and perhaps I’ve underestimated this little cameras abilities.

I can’t wait to use this camera again when its sunny as I think the results then could be absolutely stunning!

More walking to work…

I actually can’t remember the last time that I had to finish off so many rolls of film on my way to work – I didn’t realise that I had taken so many photos recently but I must have done… hurray!
These first two were taken with my refurbished LC-A and kodak 200 film, I love the definition…

But, the following photos were taken with my holga 135bc using Lomography’s CN 800 film
… can you believe those colours?! I’m blown away!

Photo35_31APhoto37_33APhoto38_34APhoto39_35APhoto40_36A

It’s funny as before Photo Meditations I used to be quite reluctant of taking photos of the same thing but now I could take photos on my walk to work everyday if I’m honest, it’s mostly the one time of the day where I’m completely on my own and although its only 10 minutes tops, its just what I need to start my day, especially if I have a camera with me and the sky looks like these!

Cameras: Refurbished LC-A and holga 135bc

My first Lomokino video!!

Are you excited?! I am!
In fact, I’m also incredibly glad that I bought this camera, it’s so fun!
As I wasn’t able to get to Kirkstall Abbey in the daylight, I ended up filming one of my first Lomokino rolls walking to work… the sun has been beautiful in the morning lately creating gorgeous colours in the sky and I’m really glad that the Lomokino managed to capture that, even if the results are a little grainy.
Enjoy!

Photo Meditation photos…

I took these during week 1 of Photo Meditations. Every day I walk the same way to work and I have taken a lot of photos of the route but this time I tried to implement what we had been taught that week and see it a bit differently. I’m really happy with the results.

Autumn for Adele…

I have so many photos of my walk to work (see here, here, here and here for a few) but I can honestly say I never get bored of taking photos of it – it changes with each day and I love seeing how the seasons affect it. Isn’t the Autumn light just beautiful in these too?

Happy weekend!
I’m off to Belfast with my girls, frock and cameras, which should be great fun!
See you next week.

p.s. I have no idea why the shadow looks so huge in the bottom left photo, or even what was next to me? I like to pretend its because I’m standing with Hagrid though, haha. Nerd.

A new phone means… camera apps!

You would think as someone who uses mostly film that I wouldn’t be interested in camera apps that recreate the look of retro cameras… but I’ve always loved the look of Instagram and Hipstamatic – especially Naomi, Nicole and Katrina’s photos – its such a great way to capture fun memories without worrying about the cost or if something might go wrong developing, or you’ve left the shutter on B instead of N…
And now I have my own to play with – hurray!

Here are some photos that I’ve been experimenting with this morning whilst waiting for the bus and walking to work.

Admittedly it’s an android and not an iphone – and after trying a number of camera apps yesterday there is only one I really like – Vignette - some of them look better aesthetically than others and some were just terrible but I’m quite taken with the final results of Vignette – especially the grungy instant transfer one frame.

What do you think of camera apps? I would love to know – I can’t wait to use this phone to finally upload fun snapshots onto twitter – even if it just an amazing sandwich!

p.s. thinking about it I used to use Poladroid and Rollip all the time when I first started blogging, its not much different… sometimes I just need to take photos whatever the camera.

Location: my walk to work just outside Leeds
Camera: HTC Desire Camera with Vignette App.
Effect: Grungy Instant Transfer 1 frame with either the toy camera, portra or velvia effect
(I think these will be my top 3 choices)

A most beautiful morning!

I haven’t really enjoyed the snow or the cold so far this year… but this morning was completely different… it was absolutely beautiful…

Even though I only had my phone with me to take photos (I’m a bad lomographer…) I think the panorama ones really captured the colours of the sun rising and the crispness of the snow.
I’m going to ignore that it was -10!!

To make it even better I was listening to Winter Wonderland as I was snapping away and generally feeling quite christmasy, eeeeeeeeee!

A cold winter’s morning…

Walking to work with Helga the Holga is my new favourite hobby!

p.s. the lovely Eadaoin is a featured guest on Pugly Pixel! Its the best of both worlds!

p.p.s. If you want a christmas card from me – today is the last day to email me your address!

Roid Week! Day 2…

Photos taken whilst walking to work…
I’ve been wanting to take a photo of the magnolia tree for ages! Hurray!
