SQ JeanniesRoomMany podcast listeners ask us about the weekend tiki events.  They usually want to know what to expect.  What to bring.  What to wear.  How much fun will they have?  They want tips to enjoy their weekend.  Well, thats what this podcast is about.  We invite listeners and Tiki Caliente attendees into our hotel room for a LIVE podcast.  Highlights of the show include cocktails, listener Q&A, BBQ Tiki Ribs by Michael Contos, plenty of music, and everyones favorite game “Whats in Kalani’s Bra.”  It wouldn’t be a great show without some cocktail recipes, see below for those.  So rather than type anymore, just listen to this weeks show to hear exactly what its like to be in a room full of fun loving tiki enthusiasts.  Cheers and Mahalo

ZTL Sq RichardSunshine and Starshine have just returned from their adventure to Mojave Oasis in the fabulous California Desert.  After sharing a large cocktail we recap some of our favorite memories from the event and look forward to our next journey to the hottest tiki campground this side of Mars.  We are proud to say that Sunshine entered a cocktail as usual in the event crawl contest and tied for first place, tied with a ZTL fan who is also quite good behind the bar.  Kevin, the co winner has coincidentally just started his ow RUM centric podcast that we recommend you check out by clicking ……… HERE!  Give 5 Minutes of Rum a listen.

Next up we want to remind everyone that our exclusive ZTL tiki mug made by PopTiki of Colorado is about to be off the market. For just $45 you can have your very own Big Orange Richard, plus shipping.  Or, if you are attending Tiki Caliente 5, you can save on shipping by picking up your mug at the event.  Sweet deal.

Speaking of Tiki Caliente 5, the event is about to be sold out.  Use the link above and click on the “sales/news” tab and get yourself a hotel room and or wristband.  You MUST have a wristband to attend the event.  A full weekend of sun, fun, music, cocktails, parties, vendors and lovely Palm Springs.

Need a new vintage Hawaiian shirt or dress for the event?  Try ebay or one of these web sites that specialize in vintage clothing including the Hawaiian schtuff we all love so much.  Sunshine just grabbed two AWESOME vintage barkcloth Hawaiian shirts on ebay and could not be happier about the deal.  You can also pick up a sweet new shirt or dress from the vendors at the Tiki Caliente event.

SQ LG Pasties-1Every now and then we do an all music show. Sunshine is in the lounge solo while the ladies attend various engagements. What better reason for a podcast filled with music that sets the mood for a cocktail party inside Jeannie’s bottle. Just a week after recording this show we will be heading to Mojave Oasis for a tiki camping weekend. And, our tent will be decked out in Jeannie style. So mix yourself a cocktail and relax while the music does all the work this week. Cheers and Mahalo

SQ Peep BurnOk, so this is a loud podcast.  Taking the show on the road again, to the home tiki escape of Rory Snyder.  While sipping cocktails made with Deadhead Rum Sunshine, Starshine and Kalani enjoy a swank cocktail party @ Calsita.  Rory is busy organizing and planning Tiki Caliente 5 and took some time to chat and drink with us on the podcast.  With just 45 days till the event you will want to listen to this episode of ZTL to get all the details you could possibly want.  Rory also answers a few listener questions and some less appropriate questions posed by Sunshine.  For all the fun, listen to the show.  We end the program with two Arthur Lyman tunes chosen by Sunshine and Rory.  Cheers and Mahalo

ZTL Sq RichardOn this weeks podcast you will want to overlook the slight audio quality issues and stick to it.

Our first segment brings us a cocktail in the works.  Using the aged Deadhead Rum, Sunshine is working on a tasty libation to be served at the upcoming tiki events Mojave Oasis and Tiki Caliente 5.  Cocktails never come out right the first time.  Or fifth or tenth.  A good drink is often played with over time and individual bartenders like to make their own adjustments to drinks as well.  Sunshine plays with his concoctions a few times before unleashing them on the ladies who can give feedback on overall servability since they have different tastes.  And, when a cocktail pleases all three ladies we know we have something special.  So, our goal is to take our I Dream of Jeannie inspired cocktail to a place that will make anyone feel like they have a mystical bottle trapped minion.  Stay tuned or join us at either of the above events to taste this one for yourself.

Did we mention that Big Orange Richard was back in town?  For a limited time our friends at PopTiki.com are making another small batch of our official tiki mug.  $45 plus shipping gets you our big 24oz mod orange moai.  Follow this link for more pics.  Want yours now?!!  Send a request to mail@zentikilounge.com and let us know you want a mug before they are sold out.

Stewardess vs. Flight Attendant?  Bartender vs. Mixologist?  We discuss.

What would you do if you faced several major operations at one time?  How would you pay for it?  We don’t know either.  And thats why we want to get the word out and help Richard Cheese who we have played on the show before.  He needs a corneal transplant and we can all help by making a donation of any size using this link: Help Richard Cheese get a new Eye.  When you donate you can choose some merch items or choose to let all of your donation go towards the cause.

Catch some great music from The Revomatics and Kitty Chow and Fisherman on this weeks podcast.  Both acts can be seen and heard live at Ohana: Luau at the Lake this June in Lake George, NY.  Great stuff!

We also have a real nice interview with Amy Boylan from the Tonga Hut in North Hollywood.  A little history on the longest lived tiki watering hole in Los Angeles.  You need to visit the Tonga Hut if you haven’t already.  In the interview you will find out Sunshine’s dirty little secret.

Take a look at the art of El Gato Gomez.

Sunshine gives you Part 2 of our “How to host a hotel room party.”  Tips on making sure everyone including the hosts enjoy your hotel room shindig.  Or get some tips on attending one of these fun events.

See, you have so many reasons to listen to this weeks podcast.  A lot more than we felt like typing here in the show notes.

Cheers and Mahalo

SQ Laguna BlueThe Zen Tiki Lounge podcast has had the good fortune to meet many people in the tiki community.  And we try to bring you interviews and timely information that not only informs but peeks your interest in upcoming events, new music and the booze we all like so much.  This episode is all of those things.  We start with trying Deadhead Rum.  Deadhead Rum is a 6 year cask aged spirit distilled in the state of Veracruz on the Caribbean/Gulf of Mexico coasts.  Deadhead is made from a mixture of sugar cane juice and molasses.  Combined with glacial waters and pure cane sugar, the end result is a truly smooth sprit with some of the best aromas we have experienced.  Those of you who have listened to this podcast for any length know that we only say what we really think about the music and spirits we try on the show.  It was very easy for us to decide that Deadhead has a permanent place on our bar shelf.  Oh, and did we mention how freaking cool the bottle is?!  Listen to the show for even more detail and tune into our next episode for an interview with Kim Brandi from Iconic Brands and Sunshine’s first cocktail crafted with Deadhead Rum.  You will want this drink recipe!

Next we have a very nice interview with Amy Boylan.  Amy is co-owner of the famous Tonga Hut in North Hollywood and the organizer of The Gathering of Friends at Mojave Oasis.  Having a conversation with Amy is always a pleasure because her passion for the tiki culture comes through very strongly.  In this chat we learn how Mojave Oasis came to be, a little history of the Newberry Springs area and all the details you could possibly need to enjoy yourself at the upcoming event at this fabulous tiki campground.  The Gathering of Friends event is April 12-14 and there are a very small number of campsites and trailer sites still available.  If you like the idea of spending a weekend with some very cool and low key people, cocktails around a lake, movies under the stars and some great food and live entertainment….then this event is for you.  Amy was nice enough to invite ZTL to the event and we certainly couldn’t miss it.  As with most tiki weekend events you can also expect a tent crawl (room crawl) where professional and amateur mixologists alike show off their creative cocktails.  ZTL will invite you into our tent to try a yet to be named cocktail made with Deadhead Rum.  Be sure to listen to episode 273 for the second half of our interview with Amy where she shares some fun stories of the Tonga Hut and the info about the best rum club you will surely want to be a part of, The Loyal Order of Drunken Bastards.

Last up is Sunshine’s tips on how to host a room crawl at one of the many tiki weekend events.  Whether you are hosting for the first time and don’t even know what a crawl is, or if you just want some tips and tricks….we have something for you.  This is just part one of our room crawl tips and we were sure to include suggestions for being the perfect crawler as well.  Listen to the show for more tidbits than a classy pu pu platter.

You don’t need a cocktail recipe to sip along with us this time.  Just pop the cork on a bottle of Deadhead Rum and sip it neat.
