FAZ VS FOOD

March 31, 2013

My trips to the US are always a strange mish mash of fitness and culinary adventures. I’m happily going for runs and Bikram classes every other day, and then suddenly, like this weekend I decided to order half a rack of beef for myself in Palm Springs. Of course I didn’t finish it, but look at this monsta:

Faz vs Food. Food won, this time.

I’m surprised I’m not the size of a whale considering all the Mexican food I’ve inhaled. One of my favourite spots for an Asada burrito is Pinches Tacos. Their food is consistently amazing, and they open till late.

My favourite is their Asada burrito pictured below [I never have beans in my burrito. Not the biggest fan of beans]. Plus, always make sure you ask for their hot sauce. It’s to die for!

It’s not hard to stumble and fall flat on your face on a good burrito in LA. The abundance of good Mexican food is one of the many reasons why I love this city. Last week, we sought out what has been touted as the best fish tacos in all of Los Angeles. Ricky’s Fish Tacos is a makeshift taco stand that’s set up in a small parking lot just south of Hollywood Boulevard and you have to go on their Twitter page to see if they’re open, or if – horror of all horrors – the tacos have been sold out for the day.

Ricky is best known for his fish tacos. He [and his team of taco experts] fry up the basa fish to order. Thin-sheathed crust over flaky white fish, judicious steaks of crema and my favourite part – motherfuckin’ hot sauce that made me lick my fingers. We ordered up some fish tacos and shrimp tacos too – and walked twenty blocks after to burn off all the fried [good] crap we had. ;o)

THE HOAGIE

December 24, 2012

The hoagie deserved a post of its own on this blog. J has been raving about them since we’ve started dating, and today, after almost three years of not eating red meat, he chowed down on one of these babies, and so did I. You could order the infamous Philly cheesesteak in various sizes – large [17 inches - pictured, which was wider and longer than my forearm], regular [11 inches, which J and I split], and a mini [7 inches]. It comes with cheese and beef, cooked as you order and you could choose to add mushrooms, hot peppers, sweet peppers, amongst other things.

I had it for lunch [5.5 inches], and I’m still too stuffed for dinner. How’s your holidays been?

NO MEAT FOR NOW

November 24, 2012

I’ve been on a semi-vegetarian diet for the past couple of days, evolving to a full vegan diet today before I embark on a five-day juice cleanse for a story I’m doing. It’s quite exciting to see the changes my body will go through, and how I will feel for five days without solid food.

Just before I cut out eggs from my diet, I whipped up the local favourite egg tofu on a hot plate I purchased a couple weeks ago in Chinatown. It’s the simplest dish in the world – your vegetables of choice, with some garlic, oyster sauce and a lil’ sweet soy sauce stir fried and then dumped onto a hotplate with two eggs seared in it. So good.

Since I started dating J, my penchant for red meat has almost ceased to exist, simply because he’s a health nut. Sure, I cannot say no to the occasional pulled beef burrito or a succulent piece of seared wagyu, but most times, I’m like ‘meh, just gimme chicken already’. I don’t eat mutton or lamb just cos’ it smells weird.

I don’t think I’ll ever turn completely vegetarian because I love chicken and seafood too much, but I like experimentations on my body. Keep watching this space for my daily journal I’m going to be doing.
