Hello Kitty at Thirty

When it comes to Hello Kitty or anything kawaii, I compromise everything. I told myself I didn’t need a new pair of shoes this year, but I bought a pair of the Hello Kitty + Vans collab pair (even if I already have the Dr. Marten pair. Tsk, tsk!) I’m also really against using anything that has chemicals (at what I could best control at least) on my body and in my home, and of course, I had to pick up this toxic-ridden glue nail set. Yes, they feel a little funny typing this, but they also match my shoes.

I’ve questioned having “cutesy” things many times, I remember reading many, many “fashion don’ts” and Hello Kitty is one of them, and I’ve wondered if growing up (or lack of) has ultimately lead me to this obsession. It doesn’t matter. They ultimately make me happy to look at them and to have them.  Now why on Earth would I deny myself happiness?

Are you a Sanrio/kawaii fangirl like me?

I see those at the store all the time! If I didn't think they'd go flying off in aerial I have them on in a second haha Don't care how old I get, I will always love Hello Kitty!

  • i totally agree! Hello Kitty will always hold a special place in my heart too!

Please… I just got a Hello Kitty tattoo. It doesn't matter that I'm asian and a girl, all that matters is that it makes me happy! If HK makes you happy, then do it!

  • Yes, I am a Hello Kitty fan girl. At 18 I got a tattoo of her face winking on my side, so pretty much I kinda have to like her seeing as things of the tattooing nature are permanent.

Here Here to doing things that make us happy! =)- Sarahhttp://agirlintransit.blogspot.com

  • I admit, I'm a Sanrio and kawaii fangirl. I have a distinct memory from childhood of going to this old fashioned toy store called Puddle Duck, buying a Little Twin Stars pencil pouch, and gaping at all the Hello Kitty merchandise. I grew up with things like the Care Bears and Lisa Frank, so it's hard not to love kawaii things!

I still wander into the Sanrio store every now and then. I wish they'd bring Deery Lou back, I looove him! <3 No one is too old for Hello Kitty, I know plenty of grown women who still rock her stuff, myself included. :D - Nina

I love Sanrio. Always have, always will. <3

  • They are so cute!! My favorite Sanrio character is Chococat :) I LOVE cutesy (as you probably can tell lol) and I never want to not love it just because of my age.

uh oh …i just read your tweet. ;)

  • I like what the Amanda said. I was a hardcore Kawaii/sanrio collector for the past 7 years but then a very mean person (my mom) made fun of me for having my craft room partially decorated with Kawaii items. It hurt my feelings but I am in the process of redoing my craft room and I have shelves with Sanrio characters on them ;)

how could anyone say HK is a fashion don't??!! how many icons like her have remained perpetually popular and beloved for over 30 years? haters gonna hate I guess. the nails are great, I sorta wanna pick some up myself even though I don't like fake nails.

oh yes! Forever a womanchild. :|

  • I confess I was the crazy woman in line at McDonald's asking for the Happy Meal with the Hello Kitty watch. I even got an extra watch for my 31st birthday. We will never outgrow Hello Kitty. And now I am okay with that.

I'm 34. I love Hello Kitty! My co-workers recently made fun of the Hello Kitty seat covers in my car… but I was like what? At least I can always tell which car is mine.

My girlfriend is in her late 20's and she loves everything Hello, Kitty. Whenever I see stuff in Target or UO, I pick it up for her. :)

well happy 30th!!!i do not share your joy of hello kitty. but i indulge in many things that are deemed inappropriate for the elderly (er, the over-40 crowd. sigh.). lol.

  • i-zilla says:

oh my those nails are fabulous! i too struggle with the "am i too old for this shit?" but I decided, fuck it. i'd rather be myself because having those cutesy things makes me happy and that's all that matters!rock those nails girl!

  • Amanda G. says:

Love, love, love all things Sanrio. I have always been a Chococat fan personally.

  • Stephanie says:

Hello Kitty's never been my thing, but I will probably be obsessed with Fraggle Rock until the day I die. I still watch it fairly regularly. And sing along. So I'm in no position to judge. ;-)

  • Abigail. says:

Chococat! Sanrio didn't quite hit scotland, so when I went to California on holiday when I was about 12 I must have spent a fortune in that shop. I got my uncle to buy me this huge chococat hamper to bring back for my birthday full of Chococat goodies, and I still keep my little stuffed cat around with me. I wish it was still socially accetable to buy cuddly toys for myself at 20…

  • I'm obsessed with all things Sanrio + Kawaii, but you might have already known that when I dropped "Beary Lou" awhile back on twitter. Did you ever get a chance to check out Deerlou's friend? I love these nails and see them every time I'm a Target. Seeing them on you here has pushed me over the edge, I'm going to get them!
