brewed.

I have a Starbucks literally feet from my front door. I thought it was a luxury to walk over and start my work day at home with Starbucks. I was so wrong. The ultimate luxury, my dear friends, is a French press, coffee afresh, at it’s best. It’s a labor of love, trust me. 4 minutes seems like a short while but when first awakened, and coffee is the only remedy, 4 minutes seems like forever.

The luxury goes beyond the coffee- the amount of money I’ve saved this year (stopped counting at $100), coffee at it’s delicious peak without being filtered, there’s no line, I’m no longer agitated from searching for my wallet, my shoes, half awake but still somewhat asleep. Plus, going to Starbucks in your pajamas at 6am? Not cute when you’re 29, frizzy haired, eye gunk, smeared mascara, with my short bangs sticking up straight in the air.  Especially standing in line with handsome business men in suits and ties (hey, it’s the suits and ties that make them handsome- picture them in regular clothes…yeah, I thought so). Not only did my $$ go out the door with each order, but also dignity of walking out in public in pajamas.

My old French press cracked and I treated myself to a pink press (I just checked Amazon to try to link it, but it’s sadly sold out in pink). It really does make my morning a little more luxurious.

 New Coffee Press

New Coffee Press

I know to many coffee is coffee, but I think it’s the ritual that makes my morning.

(Before you start swinging at me how amazing corporate coffee is, I love Starbucks, especially in the the passion iced tea! However, this is a personal habit I had to break for myself- nothing against their company or their coffee.)

  • katieebee says:

french press is the only way to have your coffee. once you try it that way, you never go back!

I don't comment often because I don't wan feel like it's just another comment you need to reply to (you don't) but I read and love every one of your posts. xoxox

  • Lulu Peddar says:

You've done well, Starbucks is great but can be pricey everyday! That is so godamn cute, I think I want one! Will have to wait till they have more in pink…..

  • Erica says:

  • cocosparkle says:

  • stina honey says:

I worked at starbucks for a few years and we had to drink from a french press cause thats the best way to taste all the flavours.I bought a french press immediately after I started working there!

  • jackie says:

I completely understand! I too love Starbucks, but I wish to own a French press. That way I could buy their beans and make coffee at home whenever I want. Way more convenient.

  • okay, first i have to admit that i don't like coffee. at all. don't hate me!i cracked up at your early morning coffee run description! if there was a donut shop close to me, i'd do the same thing, and i'm sure it wouldn't be pretty!

  • Miss says:

Ooh I love a french press! I have a bright pink one that i haven't cracked out since I moved, but really should..I actually used to work at a Starbucks and that's where I learnt to enjoy it!x

  • Helena says:

Hi!Love the pink coffee maker and coffee isn't just coffee…taste the coffee in italy..go in to one of the old stores that sells coffee beans..well im swedish and we are after finland i think the biggest consumer of coffee per person so i would know :) You right very well by the way – like your blog!

  • ocasiocasa says:

I am blog stumbling this morning, and can not recall how I happened upon yours, but am happy to have done so. I imagine that I will be following for awhile. You’ve just reminded me that French presses are wonderful inventions. And, if one can make you go without Starbucks (right next door, no less), then I should dig mine out from under our sink. Not sure why it was put away to begin with. Love the pink.~dale

  • Jess says:

i love it! the pink looks very retro. but i hear they tend to crack regularly and therefore you need to replace them regularly? are they expensive?

  • alexkeller says:

any coffee shop latte habit is expensive. at $3-5 a pop you'd be saving hundreds a year. (and that's not counting the delicious lemon bread – oh, my!)having been a barista, i agree that fresh is best. we always have a French press on hand in case the electric maker breaks. little stove top espresso makers are fantastic, too (and good for camping!)

  • Maddy says:

A french press has been on my wishlist forever! Don't know a thing about brewing coffee, but I always figured that if I found the right press, I'd learn to use it :)

  • i use a french press every morning (mine isn't pink, totally jealous) but it does make some of the best coffee. i worked in an independent coffee shop for years and it's a topic and an industry i feel strongly about (although i won't leave my opinion here since that's not what this post is about). so yes to pink coffee presses!!!

  • Alessandra says:

this is soooooo cute!I'm an espresso lover as an Italian but this press is so pretty!

  • Kyla Roma says:

I love coffee, but I've never had it in a french press- is the difference really that big? I think I need to sample some…… but between all the teapots, the coffee machine & espresso machine I think my husband might start to raise an eyebrow lol

  • Katy says:

Hah…since my husband actually works at Starbucks, we save even more money! He gets a free pound of coffee every week if he wants, and I brew it up in my own sexy little French press every morning! It's quite wonderful, you're right!Of course, every once in a while, I just need a good cappuccino or vanilla latte, too….

  • laynemarie says:

I AGREE WHOLEHEARTEDLY. There is NOTHING like good french pressed coffee!Sadly, I've gotten out of the habit of doing it and drink home drip most mornings. :( Meanwhile my french press sits there sad, unused. I've just got to get a new grinder so I can go back to it!Also? One of my fave, most delicious desserts is a big scoop of good vanilla ice cream in a mug, with fresh hot french press poured over it. Heaven!(Though I've yet to try it with coconut or soy ice cream I suspect it's just as delish!)

  • Mary Grace says:

You are hilarious. Especially about the business men in suits. I also love Starbucks but visiting it too often was also a habit I had to break.

  • carly. says:

i don't even like coffee (i'm a tea girl) but that is SO darn cute i just may have to start!! haha :)

  • Kelly says:

What a cute french press! I've never seen a pink one but it is *clearly* the way to go.

  • sophi says:

awww :) i like your it's not cute when you are 29 , I know what you mean i think it stops been cute at 22 or so… well for me ^.^ coffee is my ritual too…

  • DearBeatrice says:

the french press is so cute!!! my sis has the same one, but she got it at tj maxx. ^.^

  • katrina says:

that is the cutest french press i've seen in my entire life! starbucks has pretty good coffee, but i much prefer coffee from Peet's or even coffee from Trader Joe'. but, Starbucks has other delicious concoctions, like their soy green tea lattes or caramel macchiatos… mmmm…

  • CaL says:

So sad that its no longer in pink… =( But I totally get the not-wanting-to-spend-tons-of-money thing. This is why I stick with my at work coffee machine. But I do believe a French press would be a perfect buy for me… hm. Invest? I think I will!

  • Stephanie says:

Your French press is so cute! My husband and I have one, but we got it at his request, so it is not nearly as adorable. I don't think he'd have gone for a pink one, But now I kind of which I'd told him to get a red one to match our black, white and red kitchen!

  • Annah says:

That looks beautiful and coffee sounds SO good right about now. YUM

  • Mollie. says:

I love the morning coffee ritual, and although I enjoy Starbucks once in a while for a treat, there is nothing, NOTHING like the first cup of coffee, freshly brewed at home.(And yes, 4 minutes can be a VERY long time…)

  • Liz says:

WHAT. That is the cutest French press I have ever seen. Glenn and I just have a crap one from IKEA. I think I may just have to order this one in red!French press > every other form of coffee

  • Indie.Tea says:

I'm not a Starbucks person, personally. I like drip coffee, there is an amazing coffee shop called Blue Bottle that is a block or two from me, they have the bestest coffee ever (at least in my opinion). So I've been considering a drip coffee mechanism. But your French press is so pretty that I might have to change my mind.

  • Maddie says:

i am a starbucks whore :) however, if i worked from home, i would totally brew my own coffee everyday. i just always forget to set up the coffeemaker the night before. doh! so i always have to stop at starbucks on my way to work because i'm always running late. on saturdays and sundays though, i love to brew up some coffee and sit in bed and read magazines or catch up on blogs, etc. soo relaxing. i totally want to try out a french press someday though!

  • Tarver says:

Love the french press, yours is adorable.I had to break my starbucks habit too, it just got too expensive, even if it was so convenient and took 2 minutes out of my trip to school every morning.

  • My dad WORKS for starbucks so he's the ultimate coffee snob (he'll ask the baristas when the drip was brewed and if it was over 30 minutes old he makes them make a new batch), and he'd agree with you that French Press is the only way to go. -indigo

  • drollgirl says:

this is SO CUTE!!! i have never liked coffee, but i have always been kind of crazy for tea. i quit caffeine a few weeks ago. wah. sometimes i miss it. but it'll be ok.and now you are RICH since you aren't blowing so much dinero at the buck of stars!

  • Eep, that French press is the most amazing thing! I wish I could take a tour through your apartment and ooh and ahh at all your adorable possessions.xo Jenny

  • carly says:

def need some help in the french press area. will be emailing you soon!

  • Sarah says:

YES, I love my french press! Forget Starbucks! I hate paying money for a steaming cup of gross. Don't get me wrong, I'll pay for it and drink it down like an addict. But I love my french press.

  • feebs says:

  • Melly Kay says:

oh my i love the pink french press! speaking of coffee, even though you missed the first prompt, you can still start now *wink wink* lol

  • Mara says:

I know what you mean! I used to live so close to a cafe and I spent SO much money a year on coffee when it's so easy to make myself. And I don't have to rush :)

  • Monster Girl says:

That press is unfeasibly cute. I wouldn't even know how to use one, though! Congrats on being smarter than I :)

  • Hey Harriet says:

Your pink french press is seriously sweet! I agree with you about the ritual. That's an important part of the whole coffee loving thing with me also. Especially grinding the beans first thing in the morning. Oh boy what an awesome aroma to kick start the day!

  • melly says:

My boyfriend just bought a coffee press! He's a big coffee drinker (at home and when outside) so he finally was bothered enough to ask how a bag of coffee powder and a coffee press works at Starbucks. Turns out it's so easy to use! Well, yours is much cuter, but don't tell him!

  • drinking mine as we speak. hehehe! i also picked up a part time gig as a barista at a little cafe in town called "mermaid cafe" so yeah, i get you girl, coffee takes all. :)

  • Michelle says:

Ah! Your press is much prettier than a Starbucks cup, too, I have to say. :) It's lovely! If I had one, I might be tempted to make it 50 times a day, just to ooh and aah at the press! :) he he.

  • cutest ever!! i dont drink coffee but i know lots of people who do, they must have their daily starbucks fix. way to go on saving money! :)

  • Becky says:

I recently broke this habit too! I take coffee with me in a flask rather than buying it on the way to university. It may not be fresh, but does give me my caffeine fix! I think that we can get too used to buying coffees, and it tastes so much better now that buying it is an occasional treat :)

  • Meghan says:

Oh my gosh, I JUST blogged about this! I went to Italy, fell in love with espresso, and returned to the States to officially break-up with Starbucks:) And I couldn't be happier!

  • Making coffee in a press just feels so much classier. Yours especially, it's such a dream! Now I want cotton candy.

  • Sam says:

Yes, yes, yes!! French pressed coffee! My darling buys and grinds my coffee for me – I adore having it in the morning whilst checking the net and my emails – it's one of the highlights of my day actually! Love your coffee plunger – so pretty in pink! :0)

  • Gabbi says:

Gotta confess my sis and I totally jock this press of yours… so cute! Must have in pink though. :)

  • CrystaL* says:

  • i-zilla says:

i wish i liked coffee because that thing is stinkin adorable! definitely a better way to start the day!

  • Dig the pink press! I can't live without coffee. Seriously, I'm like that darn Dilbert.

  • Dyanna Pure says:

  • Coffee makes the world go around. I am def. going to invest in one of these!

  • WendyB says:

I don't drink coffee but pink coffee gadgets kinda make me want to!

  • emelia says:

I didn't know you could get them in pink! An absolute must have. Great post.

  • i work at a coffee shop at school and it has been painful on my wallet to be at home without it! this french press is adorrrrable!

  • Emily says:

That is one fine looking press! Some day I'll treat myself to one :) I try to balance out how I go about getting my coffee. Most days I make it at home (and take with me if necessary) and other days I'll treat myself to Starbucks, Seattle's Best, or some other cafe. It can be painful watching your money disappear like that!
