You Know What Makes Me Happy? Clean Laundry on the Line

You Know What Makes Me Happy Laundry On The Line Feature

Sometimes it feels like it’s always laundry day. (I’m sure that Allison and Robin thought so, too). Since moving to Hamilton, I’ve been enjoying laundry so much since I can hang it outside! Growing up, we had a clothes line, but it was in a sketchy area of our yard with so many spiders and I never trusted the clothes that dried outside. I would shake them a hundred times and then put them in quarantine and then forget them for a few months. It wasn’t efficient.

You Know What Makes Me Happy? Clean Hair.

You Know What Makes Me Happy Clean Hair Illustration by Amanda Farquharson

You know when you have those days where you just have less confidence, everything makes you feel kind of bitter and enraged and you spend most of the day avoiding people and listening to your headphones? Those days are closely tied to the state of my hair, for me. The thing is, my hair takes SO MUCH TIME.

You Know What Makes Me Happy? Waking Up With Mocha

Kitty Cat Wake Up Call Illustration by Amanda Farquharson

Every morning Mocha wakes me up by crawling on top of my body, purring super loud and slowly petting my face with her paw. AT 5:00 AM. The first few times it happened, I woke up ready to kill people, and I would start swatting around without opening my eyes in a futile attempt to make whatever the heck was on my face GO AWAY. Then Jay would be like “Look at her! It’s so cute! Open your eyes…. you can’t be mad if you see this…” and then I would open my eyes and be magically transformed into the sappiest fool on the planet.

You Know What Makes Me Happy? A Week Off at the Beach

Amanda and Jay on the Beach, Illustrated by Amanda Farquharson

We spent this week at the cottage. It was a much needed break from all the chaos that’s been swirling through my life lately. Jay still had lots of work to do and worked through most of the week, remotely, but at least we could stay up late playing RISK, have tons of delicious food, play with the cats all the time, and float around in the lake. I spent large chunks of the week curled up on a quilt under a huge rainbow umbrella, reading magazines about Typography and Gluten-Free Living and drinking Pina Coladas.

You Know Who Makes Me Happy? My Mom.

Mothers Day Farquharson Women Illustrated by Amanda Farquharson

It’s Mother’s Day! I just wanted to write a short post to tell you all about how amazing my mom is. The illustrated picture is of my mom with Brenna and I at roughly the ages of 9 and 6. I feel like some of my most poignant memories of my mom were at this age. I still remember watching her get ready to go out to dinner with my dad and curling her hair, putting on lipstick and perfume and fancy shoes and being in awe of how beautiful she was (and still is).

You Know What Makes Me Happy? Hamilton

You Can Do Anything In Hamilton Illustration

Did you know that Jay and I are looking for a house in Hamilton? And that Hamilton is awesome? YOU CAN DO ANYTHING IN HAMILTON.

I got this tote bag from Russell Gibbs (he keeps bees!), and it’s my new favourite thing. I bring it all over Toronto on my bicycle to shock my fellow locals. For those of you who are not local, everyone in Toronto thinks that Hamilton is a really dirty suburb and everyone in Hamilton thinks that Torontonians are weird arrogant city people who foolishly think Hamilton is a suburb of Toronto.

You Know What Makes Me Happy? Lucy and Mocha

Lucy and Mocha Illustration

These are Jay’s cats, Lucy (Orange) and Mocha (Calico). They are the most hilarious, personality-full cats I have ever known and I love them to pieces. I love them so much that I don’t even care that Jay loves them more than me. When I confronted him about it, all he said was, “Well…. They are fluffy.”

You Know What Makes Me Happy? Beavers.

Worried Beaver Illustration

I have a soft spot for beavers. I like seeing them on our Canadian nickels. I love that they are this kind of hilarious national animal. I love beaver jokes. I like how their feet look like alien hands. Seriously…. google it. If I ran into one on the street, I would run away, and I like that about them, too. These are not pushovers…. these are some secretly feisty Canadians that cut knock trees down with their teeth.

You Know What Makes Me Happy? Secret Compartments

Box with Secret Compartment and much other awesomeness.

I want to explain about something slightly foolhardy that I did and why. I bought a box. Basically, this is what happened:

I needed a case to carry my watercolour supplies back and forth from Jay’s house in, since sometimes I am unable to work properly if I am afraid things will get damaged in transit, etc. I thought it would be a great idea to get a vintage suitcase and trick out the inside with my mad sewing skills so it had compartments for all my little watercolour pieces. So good in theory, right?

You Know What Makes Me Happy? Colour Coding!

Colour Coding Illustration

I am a colour coding addict. I am tempted to colour in boxes on my spreadsheets at work that don’t even have content in them, just because it’s so flipping pretty. As a compulsive organizer, I have an unending love for spreadsheets, flowcharts and graphs. Mind Maps make me smile and Venn diagrams make me happier than ice cream does.
