Private Showdown Sunday March 29th

So last Sunday there were a select few skiers and snowboarders invited to hit the showdown jump. From noon to sunset the invites didnt waste a single minute. Sadly I was scheduled to work back in Coquitlam on that date, but still managed to get a few shots in after selling tools and welders for 9 hours.

The shoot up north…

Well more north than North Vancouver lets say…

So to start off here was the crew: Charlie Grinnel Grinnell, Pat King, Graeme Meiklejohn, Spencer Watson, Dan Jonas, Liam Casey, and me Scott Titterington.

So around 3pm Thursday, I jump in my car, and go pick up Liam and Dan from their places in my little GTI.  We managed to pack 3 pairs of skis and a snowboard, filled with cam gear, clothes, and just enough food to survive.  Dan was in the back seat with gear crammed all the way around him, and well suprisingly enough we got a few odd looks on the way up to our first stop Westbank Kelowna.  As we arrived from a 5 hour car ride we met up with the rest of the crew and got straight to work.  The first night was sort of rough due to not skiing or riding for a couple days and starting off with such a gnarly rail.  We still ended up with a couple wicked shots though, and quite a few crashes.

The second day we got out around 11ish and headed out to a handrail which was shot in one of the sandbox movies.  As said by Spence the cops came and luckily enough they didn’t have any problem with what we were doing.  I gotta say, I sure wasnt expecting the constables response to sliding a handrail in a residential alley…  Later on that day we basically went to scope out what else was around town, and call it a day.  Getting back to Pat’s place around12:30am, we uploaded our footage and went straight to bed.

So Saturday we went full out and headed out by 10 o’clock.  We headed out to a steep handrail by a highschool.  Shortly into the sesh we had a delay due to Dan catching a back edge and concussing himself.  Charlie and Graeme went with him to the hospital as Spencer, Liam and Pat and I finished off this railing, and headed to the next spot.  As Dan and the hospital gang were doing their thing, Liam went to scope out this pretty crazy line a few steps away.  We had some time so we set up the line and shortly later Liam ended up stomping it like nothing.

After we got back from picking the rest up at the hospital we headed back to Pats place to upload footage once again.  Once it got dark we headed up to Apex Mountain and shot a wallride for the most part.  Liam and Spencer were celebraties.  Liam gave some kids a couple Choice Apparel stickers, and Spencer gave away a Napking bandana.  The kids gathered around and cheered them both on while they lit up the wallride.  On the way back we started the generator up and hit some pow laps in the dark 15 feet from the highway which turned into a couple cool pictures. As which ended we headed back to Pat’s and slept the night away.

9 30am arrives Sunday and we pack up to go back home to either the Mainland or Whistler since most of us have school or work to get back to Monday.

ps. ill be posting some actual riding pictures in some future posts so keep an eye open!

See Ya for now!

Everyday is a Saturday

So for those who havent heard, old local Jeff Thomas and his Theory 3 Media have merged with Johnny Decesare and Poor Boyz Productions.  They now go under the name of just Poor Boyz Productions.  Anyways… Here is a new half season trailer of their new movie “Everyday is a Saturday” .  It looks as if they have spotted the most gnar skiers  for this years motion picture.  The biggest names in skiing Tanner Hall, Simon Dumont, Sammy Carlson, Anthony Boronowski along with the new famous up comer Nick Martini.

Heres the trailer; I’m sure you can decide for yourself.

A couple goodies from 48 hours

So as you have already heard.  Grouse was pretty darn bangin during the 48 hour sesh.  Most of my time was used either riding the park, hiding in my snowcave, or in the chalet munching out.  Though i did get some time to snap a couple here and there.

And another one of Dan Jonas

Yes it is a whole week past the event, but better late then never eh!

Today I went up to check out the “Your looking good” comp at Seymour with Dan Jonas again.  Went and shot some photos of him, and a few other Grouse Mountain locals and pros.  It was a super sunny and hot day.  Pretty much picture perfect day for having a competition with over 150 competitors from all through out Canada.

On Dan’s second run in qualifiers he busted out a perfect nose press on the staircase down bar, then off to a late 3 on the stepdown booter, to a corked out 7 japan.  One of the high end runs in the ametuer category for sure.  As they announced the ametuer finalsists, suprisingly his name was not announced.

We then proceeded over to Grouse Mountain  at around 2:30 pm to get the last bits of sun.

As we took our first lap through we met up with some Atomic team riders, Paul Welters, and Andrew Jackson.  They were currently shooting with Gonzalo Tudela.  As well Joe Mickelson and Jeremy Cox were shooting some footage for their next flick.  After the sesh on the first table and tram rail, we proceeded to the new huge rail.

This rail is probally one of the biggest and funnest rails ive ever hit.  Spinning out of this thing takes little to no effort.  Id like to give mad props to Dave Cashen for this monster of a creation.

Well now its time for me to go syphon through around 500 pictures from today.

See Ya!

The Greg Jones Interview

So Greg is a good buddy of mine who has settled with a different approach to this whole life/snowboarding theme. Instead of staying in the mainland, and riding the locals just about everyday, he decided to go rock it out in UVIC and show them whats up.

Greg knows there is more to life then just snowboarding and I give him major respect for that. While snowboarding is a great aspect, there really is more out there to explore. While attending University for the next 5 years isnt always on some peoples’ lists, seeking a path somewhere can be a good start. Mr. Jones isnt a huge name up on Grouse Mountain. Though he gets up a fair share of whatever time he can find to make the journey home and shred with his friends.

So this can be known as a short random sunday night interview I guess.

Scotty: So Greg whats your full name

Greg: gregory dylan jones

Scotty: ever notice your initials are GDJ? They all sort of make the same tones…

Greg: yea haha

Greg: its pretty crazy… like some kinda g’d dj who plays some intense music

Scotty: Thats pretty rad GDJ. now onto some more important questions…. what have you been up to the past couple years since you graduated from from high school?

Greg: um going to school full time at uvic sept- end of april. almost finished my second year. work away my summers try to snowboard in there when i got time. hang out with friends. nothing too exciting

Scotty: how many times have you gotten to come back and ride Grouse Mountain this year?

Greg: ummm a handfull somewhere between 10-15 id say

greg-jones-interview-1

Scotty: whats your definition of a “silver fox”

Greg: silver fox? sounds like some kind of elusive girl that is impossible to get close to. am i even close?

Scotty: your almost on track. Its actually a babe thats over the age of 50… or well if she has grey hair, that works too

Greg: hahahaha

Scotty: alright, lets keep this PG now

Greg: fair enough

Scotty: sooo ummm when did you first start out?

Greg: start out?

Scotty: snowboarding

Greg: oh way back in the day decided i wanted to go downhill skiing instead of cross country skiiing one year at manning, i went to go rent some gear and saw they had snowboards. always wanted to skateboard but parents wouldnt buy me one so i decided to try to snowboarding. First day I hated life so sore and just sucked. did it the year after and sucked slightly less. then went to grouse with my cousin. Bought a board a year later after going through the biggest hassel renting and started to shred as much as i could

Scotty: you think of yourself as a role model?

Greg: haha maybe… im sure there are plenty of things that i dont set the best examples for kids but on the other hand i try to do what i think is right and if someone wants to put me up there as their role model id be stoked and surprised

Scotty: So how come you chose grouse as the place to ride?

Greg: because i always have fun there. no matter the conditions day of the week or time of day there is always someone awesome to shred with and something fun to do.

Greg: tell grouse i want $1000 cash in my mailbox everymonth after that comment (jokes)

Scotty: haha will do

Greg Jones and Chris Dedinsky ripping it up.

greg-jones-interview-2

Scotty: So who did you look up to while growing up?

Greg: i’d have to say all those guys in the robot film movies cause they always looklike they are having fun. like travis parker

Scotty: Well thats all i got for tonight dude. Thanks for taking the time to speak with Grousepark.com

Greg: haha ok sounds good. Tell everyone ill be seeing them up there real soon.

The Vancouver Inversion in Photos

So last week with the inversion happening, I got to snap a few shots before my camera randomly stopped working. Along with photography, you get many different ranked shots. Many people dont ever end up seeing what 95% of a photographers shots look like. Well I would like to show you some of mine that dont end up making the cut. Basically some fun shots of people riding some tables. Alot of friends come over to see what shots i have of them which dont get released, and alot of other people dont ever get to see them. So heres a few i got from last week on Jan 14th.Remember though, along with these snaps no editing whatsoever has been involved.

Liam and I went to go take advantage of it, and ended up with this:

This is another shot but with Dan Jonas on the day before. As you can see the sunset wasnt exactly the same so we ended up with more of a flat light which I then turned into a silhouette.

Well now im off to go ski some Grouse Mountain. See ya up there.

Magnificent

Alright, dudes and duddettes. Heres a bit of an update from myself.

From Wednesday until now, the weather has been unbelievable. With Cashens and cjs description i dont think I need to describe much else, other then the sunsets!!!! Now how can you forget about that. Well here is a photo I shot of Liam Casey on January 14th, somewhere between 5 and 5 30 pm.

Liam Casey - Quiksilver Park Sunset

Liam Casey - Quiksilver Park Sunset

Shooting sunsets has to be the most difficult time to shoot. Running back and forth every 30 seconds to adjust settings, and yell at your rider to hurry the ____ up. With about 30 minutes of useable time. Getting the correct shot with only a few laps can get pretty stressful. On top of that, I found out earlier that day my camera is half broken, and now I can’t adjust ANYTHING! So on to warranty it goes.

Liam managed to pull in probally around 8 tries or so during this time, so I give him big props on that. Running up the hill half the time got him pretty beat tired. With that shoot behind us, I managed to go lock up my camera gear, and hit up some laps. A couple runs in we met up with James Anderson, Maxwell Buchanan, Peter Hunter, and Joe Mickelson. Joe took out le video, and we had a pretty successful night with that. Over the past month, ive seen alot of talent start coming out of Grouse Mountain. Skiers, and Snowboarders are really stepping up their game lately, and its getting harder and harder to keep up with it.

The day after, I got to meet cj, hes a pretty nice, chill guy, whos really got some moves behind himself. Shot a couple photos with him, and Dan Jonas, during another sunset, exactly the same as the night before. While packing up from that night, I realized the pastel like drawing over the Vancouver fog. Its a pretty neat effect if you havent seen it before.  With the lights from the city coming through the clouds in different colors, it really is quite the scene.

One more thing, before I get back to studying..  I am giving a big shout out to EVERYONE on the crew of Grouse Mountain Park.  They have put every effort into this park over the past few weeks, and it has really paid off.  Do me a favour, and go tell them how awesome things are right now.  They will really appreciate it, and they will return with more fun times to come.

 Scott Titterington

Hey Guys!

Hey fellas, an update from Scotty has finally arrived.  As well just like Charlie’s update I got some good news and bad news.  So to start the drumroll, ill start with the bad.  So the bad is, theres no new photographs from myself.  Work during the day plus night riding with no park doesnt always make the correct light graphing.  So now the good news! The quicksilver park will be bumpin real soon!  The tables are in the process of being formed, and I got an update yesterday saying that one had been open, and two more are in the process, if they are not already complete by today.  Havent talked to Shaw today, and due to standby issues with the tram, and no brakes in my car, today wont be the day to go check it out.

On Monday night with the big park closed I decided to take a gander through the rookie park with a few friends.  While shredding thru i get a phone call from another friend telling me to come hook up with them along Olympic.  While cruisin beyond, we meet up with the new gang very quickly at the bottom.  As we proceeded to ride the chairlift up we got the word that side hits are just poppin. I decide to give it a shot.  Within a single run, there was at least 15 of us boys and girls shredding thru.  Including old legend Taylor Jones, back up from his gnar back problems, and whatever knee rubbish he had just been through.  3/4 of the crew started flippin all directions over these tiny bumps, i surely witnessed an improvement from a few locals, and gave em all props.  With Taylors two and a half year rehab period, he was back the same place he left off.

So with that in mind, take a step out of your regular day, and go try something new!  We got some snow falling real soon, so go play!  The Park should be back up, if not running already, so stay tuned.
