A little help with some words?

by ysolda on November 22, 2007

I need your help and there will be prizes for the help I make use of in the end. Because prizes are fun, and I really need your help!

First, bunny needs a name. The gender of this little rabbit is so far rather undecided, so see what it seems like to you. If I love the name you suggest enough to use it for the pattern then I’ll send you a free copy of the pattern as a thank you.

DSCF6346.JPG
Here’s a close up, because you can’t possibly name something without seeing its face.

Secondly, I’ve decided to do a little active marketing with some ads on Ravelry, and maybe Craftster. I think I know pretty well what patterns I want to feature, but I’m stuck on how to describe my designs in a few words. I’m in need of a tagline of sorts and since these things are often easier to come up with from a little distance I thought I’d ask for your help. I may end up letting the pictures speak for themselves, but I’d love your input and if you come up with something I end up using I’ll send you a free pattern of your choice from my shop.

Thank you for being here to answer whatever questions I might throw at you.

It might be a little odd, (our family has a rabbit problem, my father’s collection of bunny coffee mugs would attest to that) but one of our favorite stuffed bunny is name the Bunn of Y (pronounced Bunn of ee, though you could spell it that was too) lets just say this bunny is very adventurous and has even been mistaken for a UFO by a random passerby. (this is what happens when a couple of siblings decide the Bunn of Y wanted to fly and proceeded to throw it out the window on a 20 ft cord and spin it around really really fast.)
then there’s Bunny and Bunnette, who both accompanied my dad through grad school and now have PhDs in electrical engineering

As soon as I saw the bunny on your Flickr account I was thinking it’d be cute if it was a girl named Eliza, so she could be in an interspecies relationship with Elijah. :P

I think that your name sounds poetic enough to not need a tag line. I think you should name the bunny Amina.

Reply

Birgitte November 22, 2007 at 9:28 pm

I like the use of similar letters like you (by coincidence? no…) did for Elijah – the Elephant. Here’s E and L at the same places in the words.
Therefore, I’d call her (as I believe Elijah is in need of a female friend) Ruby – the Rabbit. Here’s R and B at the same place in both words.

I’m sure you’ll find a good name for the amazingly cute rabbit :)

I suggest Beatrix. Apart from my absolute adoration of Beatrix Potter, I quite like the name Beatrix. It has a quaint feel to it, while still implying a headstrong personality.

This little bunny is adooooooorable, and I fully plan to knit her/him for a small cousin of mine.

(By the way, I bought the pattern for Elijah a couple of weeks ago, and my PayPal account shows the transaction as having gone through, but I still haven’t received my pattern. Any idea?)

Pinkerton Rabbit, for some reason. I like the idea of both a first and last name, as though he could be real enough to get mail ro a credit card or something!

As for a tag line, something like ‘fairytale knits’ or ‘romance on the moor’…. I don’t know, I find your designs have really romantic and feminine touches, that aren’t too ‘girly’ or over the top. If Wuthering Heights played out in knitwear, I’d totally imagine your designs. Can’t you just see Cathy wearing the Cloud Bolero or Snow White, crying, ‘ Heathcliff! Heathcliff!”???

(Or maybe I should just lay off the caffeine….)

Reply

Orli November 22, 2007 at 9:49 pm

Peony…or Heloise. She looks like an old-fashioned kind of bunny girl.

As for a tagline–your patterns are so adorable on their own that I really don’t think they need any. But if you must have one, maybe something relating to the names?

Belle–a beret whimsical enough for the village girl and sophisticated enough for the Beast’s love

Reply

Phoe November 22, 2007 at 9:54 pm

While not very exotic, I think he’s a Timothea.

As for a tagline, I like just your name. Your designs (to me) seem quite French and your name always makes me think of Tristan and Iseult. Win!

Minty Mel November 22, 2007 at 9:58 pm

I suggest Bernadette the Bunny. I definitely think it is a female…the ears seem to drape ever so softly in only the way a girl could have.

Many of your patterns seem inspired by fairytales … perhaps “Fairytales by Ysolda”?

But also you might want to emphasise you take a lot of care in making sure your patterns are clear, so perhaps something along the lines of “Fairytales fully explained”? “Fairytales in detail?” Umm, not quite catch enough, umm…

Reply

Katrina November 22, 2007 at 11:38 pm

Since I am bilingual, and french is such a beautiful language, may I suggest Jeannot lapin pronounced somewhat like theis: jah-no (soft j) lah-peigh (silent n), in case you don’t know french. Jeannot lapin is a children’s book character, in the translation of Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit.

I wrote this to intro your designs: Sporting names borrowed from your favourite childhood fairytales and belles from classic literature such as Gretel, Snow White, and Estella; and featuring such delicately girlish details as picot edgings, lace borders, and satin ribbons, Ysolda’s designs will please the little girl within all of us. Written in easy-to-follow and adaptable instructions, the knitting itself captures the fancy and inspires the knitter to give up her day job to knit patterns à la Ysolda all day long.

Hope you like my ideas!

Ella. She’s pink, therefore a girl. Or Belle.

Since I am mexican and this precious bunny seems sooo sweet, I suggest it’s name should be “Mazapan”. (A mazapan it’s a delicious peanut-sugar based candy, from the same shade of brown)
And I think this cutie it’s a boy.

My sons and I think she’s a girl rabbit.
Hannah (gracious; it’s Biblical, as is Elijah). Raphaela (healed by God). Ragnild (Scandinavian warrior goddess). Rayna (mighty [Scand], pure, clean [French], kings’ advisor [English]). Rosslynn (Scottish, promontory).

Reply

HibiscuitsGirl November 23, 2007 at 12:50 am

Well, it’s pretty clear the bunny’s name is Lenore. She’s delicate, sweet, but a little sorrowful (those drooping ears!).

I also like the idea of “Fairytale knits,” but I worry that’s a little too precious. For a tagline, maybe something along the lines of “Once upon a time….” and then the pattern name at the bottom: “Coraline” or “Snow White” for example. But the image on which the tag line appears should be sort of dark fairytale-y, like something from Tim Burton or Terry Gilliam. Maybe try the Orton effect on the ad image in conjunction with this idea. Whatever you end up designing I’m sure will be perfect.

chrispy November 23, 2007 at 12:52 am

I suggest Mr. Bun for the simple sake that our house is comic obsessed and Mr. Bun was the name of Calvin’s female nemesis Susie’s stuffed bunny rabbit in the comic Calvin and Hobbes.

For your design idea, I suggest: You’re never too old to dress up in your favorite fairy tale. Feel like the princess you always wanted to be.

Advertising is difficult. Of course, sn ad to be eyecathing but not too “look at me.” It should come down to what you want your designs to portray e.g cute, classic or whimsical. As for a theme, I can see your designs fitting into a medievil princess/peasant scenario. I hope this helps!

As for the tagline, I would describe your patterns as “knitting elegant simplicity”.

Your patterns are very feminine, and simply elegant.

hmm, I’m still thinking of a name for the bunny but I think (even though bunny looks like a she to me) it should perhaps be something androgenous so the viewer can decide whether bunny is a boy or a girl!

Aubrey? Briar? Bryn? Greer? (re the last one – I like the idea of a Scottish name!)

Tagline – Whimsical knits/knitting?

Oh dear, looks like you got enough suggestions to name a whole flock of bunnies!

In Sweden, where I live, we have something called Names-days so that everyday at least one (ususally two) people can celebrate their name. What I do when I want to name some new item is to see whos Names-day it is, and today it is CLEMENS – so that is my suggestion.

Janine November 23, 2007 at 9:24 am

As for a tagline for your designs I would go with your name Ysolda and either Knits or Knitwear

Reply

Rachel November 23, 2007 at 9:34 am

I think the bunny is male and called Herbert. Something about the decrease lines make the expression look quite serious to me, and I pictured him as an old-fashioned british civil servant, in a jacket and cravat and with a bowler hat…

On a tagline: I also thought ‘modern vintage’ suggested above was perfect. Maybe something playing on your scots background – ‘modern vintage for bonny belles’?

The Irish word for rabbit is coinín (pronounced cuh-neen) and this reminds me of the name Connie, which I think would suit your lovely bunny quite well, and compliment Elijah’s name, too. It means constancy and steadfastness. It can be used as both a boys and girls name, but I think your little bunny is a girl.

with so many suggestions, I’m not sure how you will ever pick a name, but whatever you choose, I cant wait to knit up him or her!

Reply

Claudia November 23, 2007 at 10:15 am

Blimmin’ ‘eck! I think Katrina should win the tagline competition – her entry nails your designs perfectly. Fairytales seem to twee to encapsulate your designs, and while they are feminine, I feel there is a darker edge to some of them. Snow White, for example, with its overtones of poison and jealousy; or Estella, whose mentor Miss Havisham instills such bile in her. Perhaps ‘the darker side of Wonderland’ would be a good tagline?

As for the rabbit, I second Flora, but that may be because I am reading ‘Cold Comfort Farm’ at the moment!

Reply

Roobeedoo November 23, 2007 at 11:07 am

The bunny looks like Whybrow to me. Because he has a “Y” shape to his eyebrows / face, and a slightly quizzical air. Apologies to owners of the surname (I knew one once!)
And Ysolda is just Ysolda – instantly recognisable, one of a kind! I had it in my head that the blog was called “Ysolda Me” – that’s a tagline! Go on – Ysolda me, I dare you!

Reply

Felix November 23, 2007 at 11:08 am

For the rabbit I offer Patch, Smudge, Poppin, Miss Pippin, Buttons, Ginger-Pickles or Mrs Crumb(s).

What about Verity? She looks like a truthful little bunny to me!

Disclaimer, I totally got the idea because the first producer of Doctor Who passed away yesterday, Verity Lambert. Perhaps that’s too morbid for a little bunny. But I like the name nonetheless!

How about Lucinda (the Lapin) or Lulu for short?
I love the ears.

I too thought Flopsy Bunny – it’s how my mother describes the feeling when you’re getting over being ill and just starting to feel back to normal. My other thought was Looby – and she’s definitely a girl bunny

have fun choosing

I think Mable is a good name for the littlel girl rabbit that I see in that face.

Reply

jennie November 23, 2007 at 11:54 pm

Just to throw one more on there… as a kid, my stuffed rabbit was named Flopsy. it’s reasonably gender neutral, and although not a proper name (as was Elijah), still seems appropriate.

either way, s/he’s adorable!

Ok, I have another one for the rabbit that just came to me.

Georgette (said with a French accent)and you can call her Georgette Rabette

My real-life bunny’s name is Mabel, which is kind of nice and old-fashioned, though admittedly not terribly fairy-tale-like.

back again. following on from my tri…

Mercedes. gender neutral (in the rabbit world!) and altho’ the symbol is upside down, people could see the inspiration for the name.

Sherrill, if it’s a boy; Cheryl if it’s a girl. although, for reals? I know a couple of people have suggested it, but Peter is an excellent name for any rabbit.

If it’s a male, you could name him Brody (as a brother for Elijah). If it ultimately feels more female to you, Finna (for fair) or Nuala (for fair-shouldered) sound nice.

Of course, the face makes me think of three, for which Selas or Trini might work.

How about Imogene for a name? I know I pronounce it different (eye-mo-jean), but it was my grandmother’s name. You are saying it wrong! lol

I will also suggest my other grandmother’s name, Lina Belle (Lye-na) since your little bunny feels like an antique bunny that a long ago child loved.

Reply

Kelly Lynn November 25, 2007 at 5:25 pm

I just realised that Sibley (for sister) might be a good name too. The bunny makes a good sister for Elijah, and it would make a good gift for a big sister to a new baby.

Reply

Kera November 25, 2007 at 6:00 pm

Bella Luna if it’s a girl. There’s something around the face that reminds me of the moon.

If it’s a boy…something proper and old english, and since I’m a huge fan, something from a Jane austen Book. Fitzwilliam Darcy or Bingley or Willoughby.

I hope none of these have been repeats.

Damaris. It means “calf” in Greek, but the sound of the name is so gentle and lovely. Like young cows and rabbits and soft pink.

Tammy December 10, 2007 at 10:24 am

Hi. I lurk. I am coming out of the woodwork to suggest that your rabbit be called Prudence. Rabbits have always seemed very cautious and timid to me. You choose names with care and purpose. This name seems true to that spirit – and it is quite old fashioned, so it is in keeping with many of the previous suggestions!

I find the care you take with names quite endearing and would like to see a tagline that evokes this somehow. Perhaps something including a phrase like “literary inspirations”

Good luck with the advertising. It will be an adventure!

lizz December 10, 2007 at 2:17 pm

I think he looks like a Jumbleweed, maybe as a surname if you prefer a real first name? Sylvester Jumbleweed? Joseph? hmm… Jamie?

Reply

CBear December 10, 2007 at 3:20 pm

The color you used reminds me of the old fashioned “Bit-o-Honey” candies… so I thought of “Bit-o-Bunny”

Another suggestion – since she is coming out around the holidays – Noelle. Festive, bright and sweet.

Reply

Tammy December 12, 2007 at 10:31 pm

Pru, for short. She’s not a very girly rabbit. She probably wouldn’t like such a fussy name as Prudence.

I don’t have an argument for it, but I also quite like Eloise. Eloise and Elijah. . . .
