I don't think the buffalo creatures are real, I think they are imaginary. So as she grows up, she needs them less and less as she meets real friends, but they're still a small part of her. Then, as she packs to leave, she realizes she no longer remembered them, until now. In essence, it's the ending of childhood youth and innocence. But that's just one interpretation.
